Nobody plans to get pulled into a burnout black hole. Yet during launch preparation, it's frighteningly easy to cross that invisible threshold where recovery becomes harder than prevention.
I learned this the hard way - multiple times. When I launched my first business in 2001, I ran on pure excitement. I worked through Bay Area traffic to networking events, built websites late into the night, and learned everything on the fly. By launch day I was exhausted, but I kept pushing because that's what entrepreneurs do, right?
For twenty years, I repeated this pattern with every new offering. Start strong, push harder, ignore the warning signs, recover just enough to do it all again. I got really good at painting over burnout - take a day off, try to party through it, anything to avoid admitting I needed real rest.
Then 2022 happened. Long Covid didn't care about my pushing-through skills. For the first time in my career, I had to completely shut down my business.
During my recovery, I discovered something crucial: managing energy isn't actually about pushing through. It's about understanding and working with your natural rhythms and limits.
Here's what I mean:
Your body operates on multiple energy systems - physical, mental, creative, emotional, social, spiritual, and sensory. Each one needs different types of support and replenishment. When you're preparing for a launch, you're drawing on all of these systems at once.
Think about a typical launch prep day: You're physically sitting at your computer for hours (physical energy), solving technical problems (mental energy), writing engaging copy (creative energy), managing launch anxiety (emotional energy), perhaps coordinating with team members (social energy), staying connected to your purpose (spiritual energy), and processing endless inputs from your devices and environment (sensory energy).
No wonder we burn out! We're depleting multiple systems simultaneously while usually only thinking about managing one or two of them.
Through my own recovery and working with clients, I've learned some essential truths about sustainable energy management during launches:
A Better Way to Launch
That's why I created the Anti-Burnout System in the Big Enough Bang Launch Planner. Instead of depleting yourself before you begin, you'll learn to monitor and maintain your energy throughout the preparation phase.
Key principles I've learned:
What Really Matters
Through recovery and working with clients, I've seen how this transforms the launch experience. Instead of dragging yourself across the finish line, you arrive energized and ready.
The most critical part of your launch isn't your website, marketing plan, or social media strategy. It's you. And you need to maintain enough energy not just to launch, but to sustain your business afterward.
What am I doing to avoid burnout this time around?
Dog Park & Dog Beach - Anti-Burnout Officer Paxton says this is the best way to stay un-burned-out - it gets mom out in nature, exercising and moving around. Paxton says he is definitely not biased about this in any way.
Painting - working on a large-scale installation in my office (I have a vision for my Zoom background), doing small landscape studies, working on some Brand Universes, and going to my first networking event where I put just “Artist” on my name tag…
Growing Things - fixing up my yard (moving some volunteers, relocating some things that aren’t thriving, improving irrigation), and starting to grow more food - beginning with companion plantings to my existing trees, and scattering some herb seeds around as I aerate the beds we already have. I’ve been learning about chaos gardening and that seems like the right speed for me. Bonus: more time outside (hooray for more vitamin D this time of year) and opportunities for grounding!
Learning - I’ve let myself run a bit wild the last 2 weeks to self-soothe, and that meant learning some new skills. I’ve set up my first modern print-on-demand shop, and I’m working on more illustrations and some very exciting pattern designs. I also created my first TikToks - one showing Paxton’s amazing hurdle-jumping skills, in Adobe Premiere Rush (which I’m also learning), and one live-to-camera (an art reveal).
Getting a Grip on my Brain - I needed to get my brain out of my own way, and getting into doing something again. So I looked through all my “project wishlist” for the year - those ideas I had one day but was able to write down instead of squirreling off into the sunset. I wanted to do tiny, easy-to-consume worksheets on one of my current nerdy hyperfixations - Better Branding Through Brain Chemistry - and it’s incredibly helpful in real life. I started by making the two I need most now - Dopamine Deficiency (who else is trying to consume less social and is feeling it) and Functional Freeze (the media flood has me needing to defrost myself and get into action, stat… what about you?) Check them out in my brand new shop!
Super Self Care - For me this means taking almost-daily magnesium baths, remembering my supplements (why is that SO HARD sometimes?), and sleeping in occasionally on weekdays (didn’t open my eyes until 9:15am this morning and that was glorious and restorative).
Welcoming Spaciousness - Giving myself a couple extra weeks (today was supposed to be launch day, but I know I need another minute to get myself ready!) to take good care of myself, take on a few initial projects in a low pressure way (get in touch if you need a brand design, illustrations, web, print, or any other visual dreams to come true).
I’m also regularly reminding myself that I’m in charge of everything around here, I make the rules and schedules, and I can take it at whatever pace keeps me feisty and moving forward.
How about you? How is all of it treating you? What’s up next in your brand and how are you preparing yourself for it all?

This is the last time I’m going to talk about this like this (at least for a while…)
I’m moving into my Real Launch next and will be talking more about why I came back, what’s in store, and what a Brand Universe is.
